THE COTTON WOOL APPROACH
OR
THE RIGHT APPROACH
“Disabled Children and young people have a right to play and childcare and a right to be safe but inappropriate approaches to risk management can deny Disabled Children and young people those opportunities. Poor practice in risk management usually relates to insecurity about what is safe and acceptable. We cannot ignore risk purely for fear of future litigation” (The Dignity of Risk - a practical handbook for professionals working with Disabled children and their families (2004))
AJA offers bespoke consultation on how to consider the management of risk rather than using the knee jerk ‘we can’t’ approach.
The service should be delivered in such a way that Disabled Children and Young People don’t experience discriminative practices.
We may be in a position to support you to create a Management of Risk Policy and Procedures. This would entail offering participants the opportunity to review and write policies that have the inclusion of Disabled People at the heart of them. This is to ensure that best practice is extended and settings or services become more inclusive for all. The Disability Discrimination Act requires all service providers to make ‘reasonable adjustments’ to their policies, procedures and practices.
